stock up on gun cleaning supplies?
Just curious how much everyone is stocking up on gun cleaning supplies such as patches, cleaning sprays, and oil. Do you set up a ratio to the amount of ammo you have?

Re: stock up on gun cleaning supplies?
Cant recall the Brand but i purchased two large bottles of it,i was told it works as a cleaner and oil.
After firing my rifle some 300rds i used it and was impressed, not at home when i get back il update. Years ago i was always big on keeping my guns well oiled, especially my shotgun its amazing the grit that gets into some pieces ...im alittle bit of a neat freak when it comes to smooth pieces in a firearm i guess. |
Re: stock up on gun cleaning supplies?
Too much oil on many internal parts, can actually help junk accumulate. You have to use the bare minimum of oil, and even then just a coating of it is enough. It's a fine balance. Keeping the gun clean avoids wear though.
The biggest contributing factors I've found are powder residue, and brass shavings in the inner parts, and a bit of lead fouling in the barrel. The barrel fouling is very minimised, as we use moly coated ammo for target shooting, so it takes a long time to build up, but eventually it does. I make patches from old t-shirts etc. saves a heap of money, and achieves the same thing. In the past I've just sat there and cut them while watching TV. Get them roughly all the same size, try and use white where I can, so you can see the fouling it removes. I just keep them in an envelope in the bag. This was a tip passed onto me by an RO who saw another older guy who did this to save dollars. I try and avoid using a brush much on the barrel, so I use a heap of patches. A clean weapon, is one that will function really well when required, and it does affect accuracy. |

I also believe less is more - both in use and in number of products. Too much oil, and especially grease suspends firing residue to create an abrasive paste that behaves like a grinding compound. I do think high-pressure grease has it's place, but used sparingly on camming surfaces only of some semi and full automatic weapons. Also, product-wise, there's a lot of snake oil out there - buyer beware.

As for supplies, I just bought a deluxe cleaning kit over the weekend from Cheaper-than-dirt for about $20. This kit covers many calibers so new gun purchase will be covered. |

http://www.southernhuntingsupplies.c...nditioner.html This is pretty common stuff, it cleans, lubricates and is a rust preventative. Pungent gun-oil smell about it though, you can smell it a mile off, when first applied. Remember, less is more. You want to wipe everything down after cleaning leaving just a light coating of residue, that's all. |

Ahh ok here it is.
Break Free CLP NATO CODE S-758 great stuff about 7 bucks a bottle. |
Re: stock up on gun cleaning supplies?
Something else I forgot. A good friend of mine turned me on to Johnson's Paste Wax for helping to protect the external surfaces of blued steel firearms. It's non-abrasive and a small amount rubbed on and buffed off will bead water. Used to be difficult to find, but recently I noticed my local Home Depot carries it. He also sent me the link below. YMMV.

Re: stock up on gun cleaning supplies?
If all you have are AKs, then all you'll need are bootlaces and motor oil.

I'm a miltech-1 believer. Can't find my bottle though, so I've been using tech-nu I think it's called.

ARs need a little more TLC--clean 'em good and the OIL/LUBE the bolt/carrier even in dusty climates...practical/combat experience shows wet ones run longer than dry ones. |
Re: stock up on gun cleaning supplies?
SF,
Thanks for posting that info about Ed's formula. I'd lost my copy. I've printed YOUR post out and will first have it laminated and then it will go into my firearms/gunsmithing library that I have been collecting for years. THANKS SF. Oh, I've found that an automotive lubricant called 'Prolong', which comes in both an aersol can or in a 'pen sized' dispenser to actually be one of the best lubricants for firearms (and almost anything else that needs to be lubed). Not real expensive and a 'little dab'll do ya'. AS IT WERE. It's the only thing I use any more. My customers ALWAYS ask where they can get some of my 'special oil'. I ALWAYS tell them. So now you know one of my secrets. |

2 parts CASTROL GTX START UP. This oil has polarized molecules that allow the oil to stick to the metal better. This gives better lubrication and protection. 3 bucks at Checkers locally. 1 part B-12 Chemtool. You can buy this and the oil at your local NAPA or CHECKERS or AUTOZONE parts store. The B-12 can be had in small cans and that’s all you need. The B-12 contains high energy solvents that clean your gun very well and very fast. Carbon fouling has no chance. It did great on the lead fouling in my old Remington .22 too. In the mixture it wont melt your plastic parts or damage the finish on your stocks… at least not that I have found in my testing. If you don't use this for your car or truck, you are missing out... this stuff is awesome for cleaning your carburetor and injectors or any greasy parts. 1 part Kerosene. This will thin the oil, and stabilize the B-12 to allow for a good mixture. You can find this at ACE hardware or other such store for just a couple bucks. You probably have some for your Coleman Lanterns or portable heaters or for use in cleaning autoparts and stuff. You don’t need much and only mix up as much as you are going to use… “1 part” can be a table spoon full and that will do you just fine. This is stuff you might have in your garage already. B-12 is great stuff and I use it on my truck and Jeeps all the time. Kerosene you might already have around too. If you don’t have the GTX Start Up, you can use Mobil 1 if you like. I like the 5W. Anyways, if you already have this stuff in your garage, mixing some up for your guns wont cost you a thing. I've tested this in my guns and it works great. My Beretta Cougar and Detonics love it. The Mak loves it. The Marlin like it when I use a thin coat on the bolt... Just mix a little as you need it and you will never have to spend money on gun care products ever again. I also have a stock of old t-shirts, and boresnakes, that's all a AKS needs, plus a little lith grease. |
